A Three Dimensional Joint Element

Rock mass is a discontinuum separated by structural surfaces. In order to study the structural surfaces with the three dimensional finite element method, in this paper the characters of joints without thickness and joints with variant thickness are given based on the variatibnal principle and the idea of isoparametric elements.Besides, the precision of these two kinds of element is compared with calculated examples.
