  • In  this  study,  finite  element  program  is  developed  to  examine  the  effects  of  alleviating  bridge  approach  differential  settlement  by  emplacing  geonet  in  the  backfill  behind  bridge  abutment.    Calculation  results  agrees  resonably  with  in  situ  measurement,  and  indicate  geonet  is  an  effective  method  to  alleviate  bridge  approach  settlement.    The  effects  of  some  factors  on  the  settlement  of  backfill  behind  abutment,  such  as  arrange  form  of  geonet  in  backfill,  join  form  between  geonet  and  abutment,  and  the  variation  of  paraments,  are  also  analysed.    Theoretical  background  is  then  provided  for  engineering  design.
