Abstract: In order to understand the properties of impact toughness of frozen soil with different impact speeds, and the strength of frozen soil under high strain rates, a series of notched Charpy bar impact tests are conducted on frozen Lanzhou loess, Lanzhou sand, and pure ice with different impact speeds and temperatures. The test results show that the expanding energy of fracture in samples increases with its expanding speed, and that the amount has close relation with the testing material. The sensitive degree of the impact toughness increases with the decreasing temperature and increasing pendulum speed. The effect of pendulum speed is more sensitive than that of the temperature within the range of pendulum speeds and temperatures tested.
